creating a positive habit

water and banana at the ready!
a 6km day once again - hitting the path from cannonvale beach to abel point, a 5km return journey, andrew adding an extra km by walking from his home to the beach return. great thought and great effort, instead of driving the car to the beach! every time anyone chooses walking over driving it's a step in a positive direction, both for themselves and the carbon footprint!

storm, new camera in tow, joined us for the walk and in the cool of the early evening became photographer of the day

a lot of people out walking and running this evening - normal, it's always good knowing there are people that take advantage of where we live. the water with the activity of the boats as a backdrop always creates a wonderfully scenic place to walk or run, plus many distractions.
this evenings walk - took just over an hour, well, the 5k component of it i did with andrew - a good result.

they say 30 days creates a habit - with a streak now of 21 days, based on a daily 3km minimum, andrew is almost there!

many people will start a fitness program then give up after a short time, despite initial good intentions - i don't know their reasons but i do know one of the main ones is because they are after (and expect!) instant results - especially when it comes to weight loss. i was one of those manyatime over. when weight has creeped on over years i don't know why people think they can make it disappear in four, two, one week! overnight!
it's easy to become motivated at the start, the key, is remaining motivated which takes a strict discipline at the beginning. not really what most people want to hear or do. changing habits can be a long arduous journey at times. and sometimes the changes along the way will be small, but they WILL happen if you just keep going and don't quit

a major requirement is about building a consistency. which is why. habit forming, positive habit forming, that regularity - is important. when you build a regularity in your exercise routine, once you get through 30 days, one day at a time, exercise, rather than appear a 'chore' will become an action of will!

for your health, for those who are important in your life, mostly, for yourself, this is the place where you want to arrive. where walking out that front door, is just an automatic action that you love about daily life - and the life of the couch and a bag of potato chips, is a vague, distant memory!

some thoughts on making it happen. different things will work for different people so for any change, choose those that suit and fit with you ...

  • commit to thirty days <- this is what you need to make the habit, automatic. and anyone can do anything, for thirty days!
  • do it daily <- consistency is critical if you want to make it stick...activities you do once every few days are trickier to lock in as habits.
  • start simple <- it's easy to get over-motivated and take on too much
  • remind yourself <- regularly of what you have to do.
  • stay consistent <- cues like time of day, place and circumstances being the same every single day, can help some people
  • get a buddy if it helps <- someone who will keep you motivated if you feel like quitting.
  • be imperfect <- try your best, commit to your best! - but expect a few bumps along the way.
  • remove temptation <- this one, for the eating side ...remove junk food from your house - easy NOT to eat what isn't there!
  • associate with positive role models <- you become, who you spend time around. if youre around negative or arrogant people, you will become that. choose to surround yourself only with people you want to mirror
  • write it down <- writing makes your ideas more clear and focuses you on your end result. (it doesnt have to be a public blog, it can be just for yourself - however, creating a public forum does help by creating an accountability) it can also offer support
  • know the benefits <- familiarise yourself with the benefits of making a change. what will the benefits of walking every day be for you? what are the benefits of regular exercise?
  • do it for yourself <- don't worry about other people's expectations of you. the habits you choose for yourself, are yours and yours alone. and you are the only person you can make any positive change for.
it doesn't matter when day one is of your new beginning - just don't wait for it to be tomorrow though! :D
